Flipping Your Classroom? It’s No Revolution

If you haven’t heard or seen by now, the “flipped” learning model is gaining momentum. Look at the growth at Flipped Classroom, which has grown to almost 17 thousand users in just a few short years! If you’re a teacher or administrator you don’t have to be concerned though because it’s not nearly as radical as it sounds. This is because “flipping” is just a fancy way of describing what millions of people young and old (and probably even you) are doing already….seriously. Have you ever watched an instructional or informative video on an interesting topic (aka: consume information independently), and then engaged with someone via the internet or in conversation to internalize the concept (aka: learn collaboratively)? Then you successfully “flipped” your learning, and you’re right, it doesn’t sound so crazy when described like that. Flipping isn’t an educational revolution, it’s just the continuation of the technological revolution into public education (and other segments). This is just how people learn in today’s world. Flipped simply pulls in the same inherently effective and intuitive learning process into the classroom.

One of the biggest gripes when flipping is you have to use several (often upwards of 5) disjointed tools and related user ID’s plus passwords to make it happen. It’s hard to make sure 30 teenagers can remember one password let alone a handful. That’s why more than 300 teachers in the last six months have turned to EDUonGo as their one-stop solution. EDUonGo is the quickest, easiest, and best way to flip a classroom and/or school because it has all the necessary tools and features in one place, not to mention they’re in the cloud and mobile. One social studies teacher of note, Tom Driscoll of Putnam HS in Connecticut, has organized a support group of teachers that share best practices, and utilize EDUonGo for more than 400 students. You can see a video of Tom in action at the top of this blog, enjoy!
